Top 5 Strategies To Keep Aba (And Abia State) Clean

Aba is Good, no doubt, but they has always been some major crises hitting Aba hard. This is the challenge of being unable to manage waste efficiently and productively.

Before this current administration was inaugurated, Aba was unfortunately the dirtiest city in Nigeria. Moving from Obohia to Port-Harcourt road, from  Ngwa road to Ohanku road, from Dikenafai to Ozuitem road, from Asa road to Omuma, Osusu and Faulk’s road, you were sure you will be greeted with heaps of dirt rising to the heaven. This dirt most time makes some roads un-motorable and thereby constitute to the bad and offensive odours oozing out from the city.

Just recently, the current administration of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State, began the thorough cleaning of Enyimba city. As I drove down from Abia State Polytechnic (along Aba-Owerri road) towards Park road, I saw various groups of labourers opening the gutters to create room for waterways. This is unlike what we use to see in the previous administration.

Today, the cleanliness of Aba is the number one factor that is most sacrosanct to all lovers of Aba. If Aba Residents must remain healthy to tap from her limitless potentials, Aba and Abia State ought to be clean.

As a media institution burdened with the vision of restoring the dignity of Aba and Abia State entirely through sharing of valuable information and an online meeting point for investors and local producers, we present to you Top 5 Strategies Needed to Keep Aba Clean.

It is our prayer that this article will be shared on all social networks until its gets to all the Elites, Residents, Law Enforcement agents and Ministry of Environment and Urban Renewal in the State.

We trust that these 5 Ways to Keep Aba Clean will be imbibed by all.

1.    Engaging the services of street Sweepers
One of the advantages Aba has over others across Nigeria is the abundance of labour force. You can find on demand whatever number of people needed to carry out a specific task in Aba as long as it can pay.

If the effort of the government to sanitize Aba and restore its dignity must be achieved, services of street sweepers must be engaged. These street sweepers will have the responsibility of sweeping the streets every morning.

If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should
Sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted, or
Beethoven composed music os Shakespeare wrote
Poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all hosts
Of Heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a
Street sweeper who did his job well.’”
Martin Luther King Jr

2.    Engaging the services of Waste Management Companies

An Industrialist from China who came into Aba for the first time was shocked to see that we walk on money on daily basis. He was of the opinion that the quantity and quality of refuses generated in Aba and its environs on daily basis is another key source of generating revenue for Abia State.

While serving as the Deputy Director of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), the current Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu carried out his analysis on how to convert waste to wealth in Aba but what stopped him from achieving that is something we cannot explain. However, we hope that he re-visits the file.

If Aba must be fixed again, the services of some of the best Waste Management Companies from USA and Holand must be utilized. Local waste management companies in Aba and Nigeria should take advantage of this opportunity to offer their proposals to the Government on how waste can be converted to wealth. When we achieve this, more jobs will be created and another source of generating energy (like Biomass - Biofuel) will be uncovered in this part of Africa. This is what is called Green Crude.

3.    Street hawking should be minimized (if not banned)
The rate at which the streets of Aba are littered with refuse is never unconnected to the myriad of hawkers present today. We may not advice that sales of sachet water should be banned on our streets but a more civilized strategy must be put in place to checkmate the rate at which these hawkers mess up our commonwealth.

The Abia State Commissioner of Environment must sit up to face this challenge. Whatever becomes his resolution must:
A.                            Be something that does not displace the place of the poor among us
B.                             Be something that does not bring the Governor a bad name
C.                             Be something that can make a Aba a neater city
It is our dream that a day will come when Aba will become the most desirable city to live in Nigeria.

4.    Bucket-size containers should be kept at pole intervals
It is only in Aba that we don’t see this kind of containers in our street. Beside forcing Residents to buy ASEPA bucket (which is for personal usage), the government should through the same ministry provide small size containers at various junctions and inter-poles where people walking along the road can freely drop off their refuse, especially pure water sachets.
5.    Aba Residents should be sensitized through seminars and workshops on the consequences of living in an unhealthy environment
The cleanliness of Aba should be taken more serious than it is today. Experts should be invited to tutor Aba Residents on the importance of keeping Aba clean. More sustainable means of recycling refuse in Aba should be used. “Without health, life is not life; it is only a state of languor and suffering.” – Francois Rabelais

When this is done, Aba will become one of the cleanest cities in Nigeria.
Look to your health; and if you have it, praise God,
and value it next to a good conscience; for health
is the second blessing that we mortals are capable
of; a blessing that money cannot buy.”
Izaak Walton
