Court of Appeal Fires Nyesom Wike, Nullifies His Election

Governor Nyesom Wike
The Appeal Court that sat in Abuja has affirmed the verdict of the Rivers State Governor Election Tribunal that had nullified the election of Nyesom Wike as the governor of Rivers State in the 2015 general election.

The Court of Appeal today being Wednesday December 16, 2015 delivered the judgment that further affirmed the verdict of the lower court, saying that Barr. Nyesom Wike, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer was not validly elected into the office which he’s occupying.
The Rivers State Election Petition Tribunal had earlier on October 24 nullified Barr. Nyesom Wike’s election.

The tribunal, which delivered its ruling in Abuja, also ordered that a fresh governorship election be conducted in the state.

Being uncomfortable with the ruling of the election petition tribunal, Governor Nyesom Wike headed to the Court of Appeal, saying the judgment was untenable.

The petition challenging the election of Mr. Wike as Rivers State Governor was filed by Dr Dakuku Peterside, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, in the election.

However, reports had shown that the Rivers governorship election which was criticised by local and international observers, witnessed the largest amount of violence both in its build-up and after the elections, but if truth be told, there’s more to the disgrace Nyesom Wike is facing than the conventional eye can see. The All Progressive Congress had promised of their commitment to take back Rivers State which was an APC State when Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was in office.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Electronic Media in Port Harcourt Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, Governor Nyesom Wike said he disagrees with judgment of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday and will head to the Supreme Court knowing full well that he has the mandate of his people.

The statement by Mr Simeon Nwakaudu said;

”Wike assured the people of the state that he would use all constitutional processes to protect the mandate they freely bestowed on him which informed his decision to approach the Supreme Court for further adjudication. The governor said that he still remained the duly elected governor of Rivers State pending the determination of his appeal by the Supreme Court”
