Governor Okezie Ikpeazu Escapes Death in Aba

Gov. Okezie

What seemed like an affront on the state of security in Abia State happened in Aba  on Wednesday night at about 8:00 PM along Aba-Owerri road, Umungasi when the convoy of the governor, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu was attacked by a band of armed robbers who were robbing commuters exiting the city of Aba.

Available report has it that the governor who was returning from Umuahia without his usual siren and amber light ran into the armed robbers. The security details attached to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu countered the attacks from those sophisticated armed robbers who were already robbing commuters along the Immaculate Junction.

Along the course of the combat, a yet-to-be identified victim was kidnapped, while another was killed instantly by stray bullet.

Eye witness report has it that the security details attached to the governor shot sporadically into the air to scare the robbers. Evidence will be seen at the damaged billboards at Brass Junction.

Jephter Nwachukwu, a beautician who runs an office in the area told Aba is Good Online Magazine that the gunmen were robbing a suspected Lagos bound bus, when a pilot security van without siren and amber light approached the area. On sighting the security vehicle, the gunmen were said to have opened fire without knowing that it was the governor’s convoy.

According to a security operative in the city, who pleaded anonymity, “the robbers did not know that it was the governor. They thought that it could be the Army or police, but when they discovered it was the governor’s convoy with its full complement of security details, they took to their heels.

“I do not think it was the governor that the hoodlums wanted to attack. It is just that the governor’s convoy that was returning from work without the usual siren and the revolving amber light, ran into them.” Contacted, spokesman of Abia State Police Command, DSP Ezekiel Onyeke, confirmed the incident, but debunked reports that the gunmen attacked the governor’s convoy.

Onyeke added that he was yet to be fully briefed by the Chief Security Officer to the governor over the incident.

This is coming shortly after series of midnight robbery attacks were witnessed at the Ohanku and Obohia region where residents of the area have been trained to sleep with one eyes opened and another closed.

This affront on the governor is a wake –up call for him to beef up security, not just Aba alone but Abia State as a whole.
