Hello ladies and gentlemen, this is Emenike Emmanuel, managing editor of Aba is Good Online Magazine hanging out with Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie, Founder & President of the Aba Dog Breeders’ Association right here in the city of Aba, Abia State.

Over the weekend, I got to meet him again after a long while and in our chat, he shared with me some of the interesting things going on in the world of dog breeding as it has to do with Enyimba city, Aba and Nigeria in general.

Here in this interview we talked about so many things, ranging from some vital information about the association, his passion, how members of our audience can be a part of the orgainisation, things you will gain for being a member and how dog breeding can be used to fight unemployment in Nigeria.
In a split second, may I have your attention to introduce our guest for today?

Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie is a lecturer with the Department of Microbiology, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, a member, Nigeria Kennel Club, a passionate dog lover and the President, Aba Dog Breeders’ Association.

Aba is Good Online Magazine: How did this organisation come to be?

Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie: This group of people called the Aba Dog Breeders’ Association came to be when I felt the need to bring people who are passionate about one thing, dog together under one special forum. These people are dog lovers, dog trainers, dog breeders and dog huddlers. We came together so that can interact, collaborate, learn from and help each other.

Aba is Good Online Magazine: How can you measure the growth of Aba Dog Breeders’ Association?

Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie: Oh yes! It has been awesome. Since the inception of this forum a year ago, people in Aba have really learnt a lot about dogs. We started with only 20 persons but today (a year later), we are over 50 members in number. This association has been so helpful to us. Today, Aba people are now more enlightened about dogs than they were before. We have more of pedigree dogs in Aba now.

Aba is Good Online Magazine: What do you people intend to achieve with this association?

Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie: We want people to be aware of what is happening in Aba. We want Enyimba city residents to be more aware of dogs. We want them to be aware of the fact that dogs are man’s best friend – an animal that can never betray her owner. It can do anything for her owner and even be ready to die for him. By the special grace of God, people have started buying dogs in Aba. When we enlighten them, the phobia they have for dogs disappear, making them buy more.

Aba is Good Online Magazine: How can investors be part of what Aba Dog Breeders’ Association is doing, I know people will have interest to start their own dog breeding business?

Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie: Yeah. Investors can invest. When you have a plot of land and you want to be a farmer; you want to breed dogs, you can start with pedigree dogs. Getting pedigree dogs may cost you money but what I can assure you is that once you have these pedigree dogs you will make good money from them when they start breeding. They breed twice in a year. And if all things being equal, those two times they breed, you will have 10 – 20 puppies. Guess what? You can’t sell any of them less than one hundred and fifty thousand naira (N150,000). Isn’t that cool? Sure, it is. I encourage anyone who want to invest to do that; come to us and we will show you how you can do that profitably. But before you invest into dog breeding you must have passion for it. It’s not advisable to invest in a business you don’t have passion for.

Aba is Good Online Magazine: So what you are saying in essence here is that dog breeding can actually be a way of overcoming unemployment in Nigeria?

Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie: Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! If you have the zeal and capital you will do it. And even if you don’t know how to breed but you have the capital, you can employ people to do it for you and give you report. These dog breeders and trainers will manage the business and do account for you regularly.

Aba is Good Online Magazine: That’s impressive. But there’s this fear people have about dogs, that they are very delicate animals with unprecedented mortality rate. What’s your organisation doing to address this fear among your members?

Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie: I think every livestock are all delicate. If you don’t handle them well at their tender stage they tend to die. It doesn’t matter the animal involved here; whether it is chicken, rabbit, you name it. They are all delicate. They have their various standard of maintenance. We have seasons of their diseases where we take precaution and vaccinate them. We encourage our members to vaccinate their dogs as at when due and nothing will happen to them. Keep the environment where you keep them clean.

Aba is Good Online Magazine: How do you intend to make Aba Dog Breeders’ Association go viral beyond Aba?

Mr Chukwuemeka Okorie: I’m thinking they have already started it in some parts of Nigeria, especially Lagos. It just seems we started late here in Aba. However, we are now at the frontline of happening events in Nigeria, typified by our recent DOG WALK that made history across the West Africa. Our advantage over others that started many years before us was that we formed an association first. Those people that started before us didn’t form any union. Remember the popular saying, “United we stand, divided we fall.”

We meet 3rd Sunday of every month to interact, learn and help each other. That’s why you see that our union is very strong. Last year Dog Walk was nothing compared to 2016 Dog Walk in Aba. Last year dog walk was the best and this year dog walk too was also a great success. In our meetings we try to figure out what our loopholes are, how to fix them and do it better than those that started before us. Today, we are beating those that started before us. They now come to ask of our secret. In most of our meetings too, we invite experts who come to teach us. This year, we had the CEO of Retomaq Resources who came all the way from the U.S. to teach us here in Aba. He taught us a lot of things.

Aba is Good Online Magazine: Are there incentives for people who register with Aba Dog Breeders’ Association?
